Tips for choosing your wedding cake
Over the next few weeks I’ll be featuring guest blogs written by some of my fellow colleague within the wedding industry. Hopefully these tips will be useful to any up and coming brides when planning things like what type of cake to go for, what style of bouquet or even some things to consider when booking your wedding venue.
First up are some top tips on choosing your wedding cake, kindly written by Hayley from The Bake Pod.
Choosing your wedding cake
Choosing a wedding cake can be a daunting task with so many choices on offer and millions of photographs to wade through on the internet. However, with a few of my top tips you can break it down into some of the more important things to consider, ensuring that you get the perfect cake for your special day.
Wedding cake design
Choose a design of cake that’s compatible with your wedding. e.g. informal barn type weddings lend themselves to a more natural and rustic style of cake and so the naked and semi naked designs work perfectly decorated with fresh flowers or fruit. Alternatively there are perfect cake designs to match a more intimate affair or even a large classical gathering.
cake serving guide
Go for a cake that serves the right amount of guests. You may not need your cake to serve all of your guests if you’re choosing to have other sweet treats, equally you may want to make sure you have some to take away with you. Servings are generally quoted on a 2” x 1” portion size.
Wedding cake designers
Really get to know your cake makers style and niche and make sure it ties in with your vision. There are many cake companies offering styles from modern and contemporary to more theatrical and even allergy focussed. Take a look at their website and portfolios.
Cake Tasting
Request tasters before you book and bear in mind the time of year. Fruity, fresh flavours such as strawberry, lemon and coconut are great in the summer whereas ginger and chocolate lend themselves to winter weddings. However, I always say ‘it’s your wedding so make sure your favourites are in there!’ You can of course have a different flavour for each tier too!
Wedding cake costs
Generally, the more intricate and elaborate the cake design the higher the price. Remember it’s the cake designers time that you’re paying for so a cake with lots of handcrafted sugar flowers, intricate piping and ruffle effects will take many hours and will therefore need a bigger budget. Often wedding cakes are bespoke and therefore difficult to price, however your cake maker should be able to provide you with a ‘starting from’ price.
